A Hymn of Praise to Isis-Hathor

The following hymn of praise to Aset (Isis) is found in the Sanctuary of Her Temple at Philae.

Praise to you Isis-Hathor,
God’s mother, Lady of Heaven,
Mistress of Abaton*, Queen of the gods.

You are the divine mother of Horus,
The Mighty Bull, protector of his father,
Who causes the rebels to fall.

Praise to you Isis-Hathor,
God’s mother, Lady of Heaven,
Mistress of Abaton, Queen of the gods.

You are the divine mother of Horus,
Min-Horus, the hero who smites his enemy,
And makes a massacre thereby.

Praise to you Isis-Hathor,
God’s mother, Lady of Heaven,
Mistress of Abaton, Queen of the gods.

You are the divine mother of Horus,
Khonsu-the-powerful, the royal child of the Lord of Eternity,
Lord of Nubia, ruler of foreign lands.

Praise to you Isis-Hathor,
God’s mother, Lady of Heaven,
Mistress of Abaton, Queen of the gods.

You are the divine mother of Horus,
The Mighty Bull, who establishes the temples of the Ennead,
And fashions every divine image.

Praise to you Isis-Hathor,
God’s mother, Lady of Heaven,
Mistress of Abaton, Queen of the gods.

You are the divine mother of Horus,
The Mighty Bull who protects Egypt,
Lord of the nome, forever.

Praise to you Isis-Hathor,
God’s mother, Lady of Heaven,
Mistress of Abaton, Queen of the gods.

*It was believed that Osiris (husband of Isis) was buried on Bigeh Island (an ancient archaeological site now submerged due to the Aswan dam). The temple on the island was referred to as Abaton meaning “untrodden place” because only high priests were allowed to set foot there. It is believed that the temple of Abaton may have been dedicated to Thoth who was called “Great and Splendid God in Bigeh.”
