Qebhet, Goddess of Purification

Qebhet was the goddess of freshness and purification. She was known as the “wandering goddess” or the “lost child.” Her father was Anubis and she helped her father in his role as the god of embalming. She was the personification of cool, refreshing water because she brought water to the souls of the dead in the afterlife Hall of Truth.

Qebhet became associated with the worship of the Nile and pure, clean water. As the Nile was connected with the Milky Way and the ways of the gods, Qebhet also became linked with the sky in both day and dark. The earthly plane of existence was thought to be a reflection of the eternal realm of the gods and so balance was struck through Qebhet as a goddess of the night sky and also of the river of life which flowed through the Nile Valley to the sea.
